Weapon project Write up
The first thought that came into my mind is, what matches my theme that I started my door project with, the steampunk theme.
The typical weapon choices that I first thought of were a pocket knife, a sword, a shield and a crossbow, as they fit in the theme of steampunk very well, through the palate of bronze and browns. This lead me to the idea of making a spear, a practical and multi-purpose weapon. My idea for the spear is to make it useful for more than a single purpose, so added more to the weapon, including an energy orb in the centre of the blade, which could be used as an alternate attack. The orb could be used to light the way, by its eerie blue light, or to disable enemies.
I created this base for the spear. The part where you hold the weapon is the indented part of the cylinder, as that is where the spear balances well when being held by the character. The shape of the blade was quite challenging to achieve, first being a plane, I had to split it up and then make the shape of the blade. To then get the shape of the hole, I indented in from four split corners to get the octagonal shape and deleted the faces. After that, I extruded the plane to then get the 3d object. To get the point on the blade, I split the extrusion and brought the middle of the split extrusion out to get the bladelike shape.
I then exported the mesh of the weapon and gave it texture, sticking to the steampunk theme.I then brought the mesh back into blender and saw the result of my weapon. I really like how I did the blade by using many gradients of the colour. The blue ball was the idea of the energy orb inside the weapon, placed at the base of the blade. This is the full weapon on blender. On the top cylinder, you can see the blue energy poking through, showing that it travels through the whole weapon. I have also added the leathery look that most weapons have where the character holds it.
What Went Well: The shaping and texturing of the blade gives it a lifelike and appealing appearance. I've got the hang of using new features on blender like splitting up planes to create a desired shape. Additionally I have solidified on how to export the mesh of a shape and add texture and depth from photoshop back to blender.
Even Better If: I could put more shapes to create a more unique shape than just the cylinder. Additionally I want to improve on my drawing onto a graphics tablet to get a more believable colour and highlights on metallic surfaces, which my genre covers a lot of.
