Location scouting and Risk assessment

 Location scouting

Also known a a 'recce' where you go out to look for a location to use in your production. You will more than likely researched to location already but you will need to check in person to see if it is suitable.

The location can be anything ranging from a house to a mansion, a classroom, a park ect. The scout will have all the relevant information on what is needed from the location and what they are looking for e.g. the bedroom or entrance hall.

Location scouts will report to the location manager with details so a decision can be made to use it or not. A location scout will look out for:

- Pros and cons of the location (does it match the location and overall aesthetic of what is in the             script/plan.)

- Take photos and screenshots of the map and area.

- Find out who you need to seek permission to use an area e.g. neighbors, the government, and if there is a financial cost to use the location.

- Look to see if there is enough space to film, can it hold a crew? Equipment?

- Availability of power supply or feasibility of bringing in generators for lights and electrical equipment.

- What available light there is (indoors or outdoors) and the weather conditions.

Risk assessment

Health and safety is a big part of film production, this includes doing risk assessments. A risk assessment is where a designated member of the crew assesses each of the shooting locations from a health and safety perspective.

- 'Hazards' refers to te potential of harm. While 'risk' is the chance of that harm actually happening.     Though some hazards might seem very obvious, control measures are in place to prevent harm and risks.

- Once completed, the producer can decide weather its adequate control measures are in place to prevent harm.

- Health and safety is everybody's responsibility not just one persons if you see a hazard you need to report it.
